Hey guys, so I have some bad news. Many of you are probably wondering why I didn’t update last week since I had previously said that my workload had eased out. Well, the story is that on Friday I decided to take a nap and would start to translate after I woke up. But, when I woke up my laptop died. As in forever died. So now I need a new one.

Since my macbook died, I don’t have a way to translate properly beyond a tablet, which will take some time to get use to. I hope to get a chapter out by the end of the week, but I’m still unsure. I’m sorry that this happened but I’d like to thank you guys for all your support! I will make sure Tan Mo and Qiao Lan are back soon 🙂

Also, I previously had a mid 2019 13 inch macbook pro with 256 GB and 8 RAM. I barely had it for a year before it broke. I’m planning on buying a new one, but I’m unsure which one to get. I don’t do a lot of streneous work on my previous macbook, mostly google docs, some reading websites, etc, but it still died on me. So I’m hoping that if any of you guys know tech better than I do if you can give me some better recomendations.

Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful day 🙂

  2. You should try taking the laptop into an apple store at the genius Bar. You might have to call and set up an appointment first. Normally they have a warranty on it and will fix or replace it for you even if it’s a little out of warranty. I’ve gotten mine fixed free of charge by them before and it was 3 years old not 1.

  3. tbh I’d recommend not a MacBook at all because I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about them
laptops shouldn’t be dying from just over a year of use (light use at that)

    1. since you only really use a laptop for document/typing related purposes then I’d recommend you check Amazon for simpler laptops
You can get a really cheap hp or some other type of notebook that isn’t hella expensive for the branding

  4. I think you should start out by checking if there are any kind of sells garanti on the MacBook. A computer of that price level should have some kind of garanti (or maybe I just live in a fantasy world, where huge cooperations have some kind responsibility)

  5. I’d go with a type of Windows laptop instead. I’ve had mine 5 years and no major issues so far. It’s going strong!

  6. For a good laptop I would recommend chromebooks there very durable, they were specifically made for this kind of work and they’re cheap !

  7. No, don’t use Apple, most of them were made to be broken after a year or two, you could repair it but the reapiring cost will be as much as brand new one so it will be a satanic cycle of buying and broken.
I recommended Lenovo if you plan to buy a laptop or Samsung for Ipad

  8. You should have it looked first at an Apple service center to see if the problem can be fixable. But honestly I don’t think Apple products are reliable, and having it fixed can be really expensive since the way they design their products makes it so that when it breaks, you’ll be forced to buy a new one or shell out way more moola. For good laptop brands, personally I suggest Asus. My first Asus lasted 7 years and it would’ve lasted more if I hadn’t accidentally wrecked the motherboard. I’m currently using an Asus RoG, and so far it’s been great. Also, it’s waaay easier to have it repaired if you ever run into some problems since Asus is very much 3rd party repair friendly 🙂 Also they have a very diverse range of laptops, but be sure to choose something with 8gb or greater RAM since apps and tech are evolving.

  9. Wtf. I have a Macbook Air 2017 that I got almost 2 years ago and it’s still working fine. I’ve even played League of Legends on it… lol (no pun intended). And a bunch of other light gaming. Since you only use your laptop for light reading etc, I think a lighter laptop like a Chromebook would be perfect for you. They’re also the cheapest kind of laptop so you can probably get one off Best Buy or maybe Amazon for ~150 or so. Depends on your budget, but if you want one a little more high spec you can look into ASUS, Acer and Lenovo. Lenovo Idea Pads are pretty decent for their price point.

  10. Well, I could recommend you a gaming sub 1000$ laptop, but I didn’t look into simple laptops for work much, so idk what are the good options right now. As people pointed out, there should be a warranty for your mac (unless you got a used/grey one), so you might try it.

And unless you really like MacOS, I would also suggest getting regular Windows laptop, they are more flexible and honestly, more reliable. The only suggestion I can make is to learn how to disassemble it, in order to clean it up. You don’t need to be super tech savvy, just finding a video guide in Google should help.

I have positive experience with Lenovo and Xiaomi laptops, but idk if modern models are just as good as older ones. If you don’t play heavy games, you don’t need a dedicated graphic card (regular MX350, or any other MX, will work for light games and other stuff), so it broadens your options significantly. I’d also suggest a simple metal stand (there are ton of them on AliExpress for like 10$), if you are using your laptop on your bed. The only reason I can think of for its death besides poor quality is dust that was sucked from your bed/couch. The stand will prevent it from happening, and reduce the need for cleaning (and don’t but fancy ones with fans, laptops cool themselves sufficiently if the airflow isn’t blocked).

Wouldn’t recommend Chromebook or overly cheap laptop simply because they also tend to have worse quality. For sub 1000$ you can get something very good (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15″), just need to Google a bit for the best options right now (it might be better to get the older generation version if it’s significantly cheaper), but good laptop costs at least 500$.

Alternatively, if you mostly use it at home, you can consider building a PC, but now isn’t the best time due to shortage of components.

  11. I would recommend a Dell, honestly. I’ve had several and all of them have lasted for 5+ years. And I’ve used them pretty heavily, all the way through university and getting my Masters. Also, if you’re a student you should check to see if you can get a discount through your school.

  12. If you haven’t found one yet, check out the Microsoft Surface. I had the first generation for 8 years and just updated to the Surface Pro. It functions as both a tablet and a laptop. I like it a lot. I type papers on it, surf, take classes on it, stream movies. You can get the office suite on here and it works like a dream. The only thing is that there is not a cd rom. However, you don’t need an adapter for everything (including USB’s) like you do with Apple products
